This IDC Financial Insights report discusses the findings of the 2012 Consumer Payments Survey, a nationally representative survey of U.S. consumers focused on the usage of emerging payment technologies. The most recent Consumer Payments Survey, conducted in May 2012, found that mobile payments have more than doubled in popularity, reaching over 33% of survey respondents. In addition, prepaid cards showed strong growth, particularly in the network branded and benefit submarkets.
According to Aaron McPherson, practice director for Worldwide Payment Strategies and the author of this report, "We are now seeing 'emerging' payments become mainstream to the point where we now have enough participation to begin drawing firm conclusions about how these methods are being used."
